This site shows
some of Gar DuBois' feltwork.
I have been designing and making hats for twelve years. I
fell in love with the artistic possibilities and
practicality of felt as a medium, and have found that hat
design allows for a wide range of expression. My hats are
primarily made from premium quality merino wool batts
that are felted by hand- wetting and agitating, and then
shaped using traditional hat maker's blocks and other
tools. The accent designs are applied by hand and
incorporated into the structure of the felt during the
felting process. The design materials vary, but are
usually silk, rayon or hand-dyed wool to create the
accents. My primary focus is on women's hats, though I
make men's and children's hats as well as felted vests
and other types of clothing.
