This site shows some of Gar DuBois' feltwork.
I have been designing and making hats for fourteen years. I fell in love with the artistic possibilities and practicality of felt as a medium, and have found that hat design allows for a wide range of expression. My hats are primarily made from premium quality merino wool batts that are felted by hand- wetting and agitating, and then shaped using traditional hat maker's blocks and other tools. The accent designs are applied by hand and incorporated into the structure of the felt during the felting process. The design materials vary, but are usually silk, rayon or hand-dyed wool to create the accents. My primary focus is on women's hats, though I make men's and children's hats as well as felted vests and other types of clothing.

Upcoming classes for 2013:

None are currently scheduled, but I am likely going to be teaching Creating Broad Brim Hats later this year. In this class students will create hats on a flat resist which allows for a wide brim to be created. This is an advanced class, and will be best for students with some felting experience.

Other Fall classes may include Hats on a Ball and Complex Bag Making. Stay tuned for more information coming soon.

I can also work with you to schedule a private class if that better fits your needs. Contact me at the email address at the bottom of the page.
